The Church and Nation Committee deals specifically with the NSW Presbyterian Church’s relationship with the world of ethics, morals, government, law, civil rights, values and social attitudes among the people of Australia.
The Church and Nation Committee is one of a number of executive committees of the Presbyterian Church of Australia in NSW which administer the affairs of the church between sittings of the NSW General Assembly, a court which meets, as a rule, only once a year.
Traditionally the Presbyterian Church has been reluctant to make statements that supposedly represent the views of people in our denomination. In addition it is careful not to appear to be aligned with any political party. Much is a matter of opinion and the Presbyterian Church has always respected the rights of individuals to hold personal opinions. However many social, moral and ethical values are clearly stated in Scripture and the Committee consistently asserts these values, presenting them as our Christian duty as well as being for the good of the nation.
This committee seeks to educate and inform its members in the areas stated and also acts as the social research agency of the General Assembly. It seeks further at times to make representations to people in authority or affiliated organisations on isues that may arise.
